No man was ever superior, but never forbid freedom of speech.

A few days ago, the far right Polish MEP Janusz Korwin-Mikke made some disgusting remarks and claimed it to be right for women to earl less than men as “they are weaker, smaller and less intelligent than men”.

As a reaction, the President of the European Parliament Mr. Tajani decided to take action. Janusz Korwin-Mikke was fined, suspended from the parliamentary works and forbidden to represent the European Parliament for one year.

As much as I despise a man who can make such claims, we cannot let these sanctions go unnoticed.

Freedom of speech cannot depend on whether we like what people say.

Freedom of speech is a pillar of our culture and dropping our values means abandoning all the socio-liberal achievements we only fully reached after WW2.

I know it’s hard not to take action these horrible claims, and yet we need to understand that, sometimes, the rules of the game are more important than the moves of our opponents.

Furthermore, this is person was elected by his people and, in a moment where we suffer from an antidemocratic involution, we should always remember that there are very strong powers that are only waiting for people to delegitimize politics and ask for ‘the privates’ to take over (see the naked man trend).

Never prosecute anyone for what they say, even if it offends your very core and soul; you would be legitimizing a form of repression and, one day, somebody could come after you.
